Akop Mamikonov, in full Akop Gasparovich Mamikonov, Honored Man of Science of the Russian Federation, was born in Baku. In 1943, he graduated from Azerbaijan Industrial Institute.
In 1958, Mamikonov was transferred from the Institute of Oil to the Institute of Automation and Remote Control (IARC), the USSR Academy of Sciences (further referred to as the Institute).
In 1961, Mamikonov became Head of Laboratory No. 20 (Industrial Automation) of the Institute. From 1961 to 1966, he guided the development and implementation of several industrial automation and remote control systems in the oil processing industry.
In 1966, Mamikonov defended his doctoral dissertation.
Mamikonov was among the Soviet pioneers of theoretical and applied principles of creating automated control systems, also called measurement information systems (MISs) in the Western literature. He published several textbooks on the development and implementation of MISs.
In 1967, Mamikonov led a large group of Institute’s employees to develop an MIS for national metal supply planning and control (MIS Metal). The first series of this system was put into operation in 1969.
From 1971 to 1978, he managed another big project of the Institute, i.e., the development and implementation of an MIS for the exchange of accommodation units (MIS Obmen).
From 1979 to 1993, Mamikonov supervised the development and implementation of MISs for subways, including logistics (MIS MTS Metro) and the repair of rolling stock (MIS Remont).
From 1989 to 1992, he supervised the development and implementation of a regional MIS for logistics (in the Tula Region).
Mamikonov was awarded the USSR State Prize, the Order of the Badge of Honor, and several medals of the All-Union Exhibition of Economic Achievements (VDNKh).
As Head of a department and Professor, he taught at the Moscow Institute of National Economy, the Moscow Institute of Transport Engineers, and the Mining Institute.
