Alexey Tal’, in full Alexey Alexeevich Tal’ (also transliterated as Tal), was a prominent expert in control theory and pneumatic automation, Dr. Sci. (Eng.), Professor, and Lenin Prize Laureate. He worked at the Institute from 1956 to the last days of his life.

Tal’ is recognized as a founder of domestic pneumatic automation. In the late 1950s, he pioneered the element design of pneumatic automation devices. Besides traditional continuous-type devices (controllers and other automation devices), such an approach yielded discrete and continuous-discrete control devices based on a standard set of elements. His idea underlaid the State System of Industrial Automation Equipment (SSE) and was implemented in the Universal System of Industrial Pneumatic Automation Elements (USIPAE). In 1964, Tal’ jointly with several employees of the Institute and the Tizpribor plant (Moscow) was awarded the Lenin Prize for that R&D works. In the 1970s, Tal’ and his colleagues designed modular aggregate systems, TSYKL (jointly with Tizpribor) and KOMPAS (together with the Pnevmoapparat plant (Moscow)), and developed design methods for dozens of industrial systems. In the 1980s, jointly with the Central Research Institute of Complex Automation (TsNIIKA) and Tizpribor, the Rezhim-1 technical means complex was created. It served as the lower level of automated process control systems.

Tal’ organically combined the activities of a brilliant engineer with research on discrete control theory. Together with M.A. Aizerman and others, he was the first in the USSR to study finite-state automata. In 1963, Tal’ coauthored the monograph Logika. Avtomaty. Algoritmy (Logic. Automata. Algorithms). It became a handbook for cyberneticians.

In recent years, Tal’ led active R&D works on many discrete production automation problems: from control of machine tools and flexible production systems to production dispatching and scheduling.

For many years, Tal’ combined his scientific and engineering activities with teaching at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT). For about 30 years, he was the permanent Executive Editor-in-Chief of Automation and Remote Control. The journal owes its current content and orientation to Tal’.
