Vladimir Lossievsky, in full Vladimir Leonidovich Lossievsky, was a leading scientist in automatic control and automation of production processes, Dr. Sci. (Eng.), and Professor. He worked at the Institute of Automation and Remote Control (IARC), the USSR Academy of Sciences (nowadays, Trapeznikov Institute of Control Sciences, the Russian Academy of Sciences) from 1939 to 1968.

Lossievsky authored over 50 scientific publications, including 7 books on the theory, calculation, and design of automatic controllers, the theory and practice of industrial automation, and the similarity theory applied to automated object modeling.

He worked at the IARC as Academic Secretary (1944—1947), Deputy Director for Research (1948—1951), and Head of Laboratory No. 10 (Automation of Continuous Production Processes; 1954—1958). From 1958, he headed Laboratory No. 2 (Automatic Actuators).

Lossievsky’s many-year investigations were remarkable for a close connection with practice. All his R&D works were implemented in industry, including underground coal gasification, automated cartridge production (1941—1943), complex automation of sulphuric acid production, automated catalytic oil cracking, automation of various special facilities, etc.

Also, Professor Lossievsky carried out intensive teaching and scientific organizational activities at Bauman Moscow Mechanical and Machine Building Institute as well as at the Academy of Defense Industry and the All-Union Correspondence Electrical and Instrument Making Institute (VZEPI), where he headed departments.

Lossievsky’s main books are as follows:

  1. Voprosy avtomatizatsii nepreryvnykh proizvodstvennykh protsessov (Automation Issues for Continuous Production Processes), Moscow: the USSR Academy of Sciences, 1960. — 111 p. (coauthor L.G. Pliskin);
  2. Osnovy avtomaticheskogo regulirovaniya tekhnologicheskikh protsessov (Foundations of Automatic Regulation of Industrial Processes), Moscow: Gosoboronizdat, 1949. — 227 p.;
  3. Avtomaticheskoe regulirovanie (Automatic Regulation), Moscow: the USSR Academy of Sciences, 1946. — 122 p.;
  4. Avtomaticheskie regulyatory (Automatic Regulators), Moscow: Gosoboronizdat, 1944. — 390 p.

The books are presented in the Institute’s database:
