Nikolai A. Kuznetsov

Born:

Thursday, March 9, 1939

Nikolai Kuznetsov, in full Nikolai Aleksandrovich Kuznetsov, is Academician and Advisor of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). He has worked at the Institute of Control Sciences (ICS) for almost 25 years after finishing his postgraduate studies at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) in 1964.

Like all MIPT students, Kuznetsov appeared at the Institute of Automation and Remote Control, the USSR Academy of Sciences (nowadays, ICS RAS) much earlier, in the 3rd year of his higher education. First, he studied with Elena K. Krug; then, with Alexander A. Feldbaum. Finally, Kuznetsov joined Ya.Z. Tsypkin’s Laboratory in the group of A.M. Petrovsky. Here, he understood that the optimal control of stochastic systems was interesting to him.

At MIPT, Kuznetsov was incredibly famous; presently, he would be famous on a national scale. Kuznetsov was a member of the very popular students quintet of MIPT, including A. Filippenko, the institute’s graduate and now People’s Artist of Russia. The quintet sang many amazing songs, and its Grenada (to lyrics by M. Svetlov) would be a real hit today. For reference, Mikhail Svetlov was a Soviet poet, playwright, journalist, and war correspondent; Laureate of the Lenin Prize (1967, posthumously). But the country differed from the present times, so the fame was not national but only all-student. However, Kuznetsov still brilliantly sings and plays the guitar and banjo.

After joining Petrovsky’s group, Kuznetsov defended his candidate’s dissertation in 1966. (Note that the group became an independent laboratory only a few years later when its head received a doctor’s degree.) Soon, Kuznetsov shifted the area of his research towards optimal filtration with applications to special-purpose objects. Subsequently, control systems with variable performance criteria became his main topic. Seven years of his studies resulted in the doctoral dissertation, defended by Kuznetsov in 1973. At the junction of the 1970s and 1980s, Kuznetsov and his colleagues and students (nowadays, about 20 candidates and doctors of sciences) organized an independent laboratory to continue research.

At that time, Kuznetsov was appointed Deputy Director for Science of ICS. In 1981, he became Professor in Technical Cybernetics and Information Theory. In 1985, Kuznetsov was awarded the USSR State Prize for creating an automation system for transport ships of the USSR Maritime Fleet. In 1999, he was awarded the Order of Honor of the Russian Federation.

In 1987, Kuznetsov was elected Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. From 1988 to 1990, he was General Director of NPO Moskva (Research and Development Association of Automated Control Systems). From 1990 to 2006, Kuznetsov was Director of the Institute for Information Transmission Problems (IITP), the USSR Academy of Sciences (since 1991, RAS). In 1994, he was elected Full Member of RAS in Control of Information Processes. Currently, Kuznetsov works at Kotelnikov Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics RAS.

His current research interests include optimal control problems, including control in information and telecommunication networks, the theory of unsynchronized systems, applied mathematics, information technology, and information theory.

Kuznetsov heads departments at MIPT and Moscow Technical University of Communications and Informatics (MTUCI). He has published over 250 papers, including 6 monographs and textbooks.

Kuznetsov is Editor-in-Chief of the electronic journal Information Processes, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the journal Problems of Information Transmission. Until 2009, he was Editor-in-Chief of the journal Automation and Remote Control. Kuznetsov is Chairman of the Board of the Central House of RAS Researchers, Chairman of the Committee on Scientific Terminology in Basic Research, and Member of the Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science (IMACS) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
