Natal’ya Vasil’eva, in full Natal’ya Petrovna Vasil’eva, the Honored Scientist of Russia, Dr. Sci. (Eng.), and Professor, was a leading expert in magnetic memory and logic devices for automation and computer technology. She joined the Institute of Automation and Remote Control (IARC), the USSR Academy of Sciences (nowadays, Trapeznikov Institute of Control Sciences, the Russian Academy of Sciences) in 1950. In 1977, Vasil’eva became Head of the Laboratory; in 1991, Chief Researcher.

Under her guidance, a new branch of noncontact magnetic logic elements for automation and computer technology was developed. Vasil’eva developed theoretical foundations and design methods for magnetic logic elements, including the theory of functional stability invariant to the type of logic elements. The results of that R&D works were applied to increase the reliability of automation systems for many stationary and nonstationary objects. Vasil’eva led the development of Logika ELM50 and Logika ELM400, the pioneering industrial series of magnetic logic elements in the USSR. They were applied in many sectors of the national economy and the Navy. Note that their use in ship control systems was large-scale and efficient.

In 1977, Vasil’eva organized and headed the Institute’s Laboratory of Computer Memory Devices on Continuous Magnetic Media. In such magnetic media, non-volatile and radiation-resistant devices were created with flat magnetic domains as data carriers.

In 1988, Vasil’eva became the initiator and supervisor of R&D works on ferromagnetic multilayer thin-film data carriers: magnetoresistive storage elements and magnetic disks and tapes. In recent years, she generalized and analyzed the investigations of magnetic spintronics, first of all, multilayer thin-film magnetoresistive elements.

Vasil’eva published 7 monographs and over 100 papers. She repeatedly reported at international and all-Union conferences. Under her academic supervision, 15 postgraduate students defended their dissertations.
