Yuri Portnov‐Sokolov, in full Yuri Petrovich Portnov‐Sokolov, was a prominent scientist in the design of onboard control systems for the objects of rocket and space technology. He participated in R&D works at Rocket and Space Corporation Energiya, Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center, State Research and Production Space Center TsSKB‐Progress, Yuzhnoye State Design Bureau, Scientific and Production Association of Automatics, Pilyugin Scientific and Production Center of Automation and Instrument Making, State Research Institute of Instrument Making, Krasnoe Znamya Plant, and others. In 2001, the country’s scientific community celebrated his 80th birthday.

In 1946, Portnov‐Sokolov graduated with honors from Moscow Aviation Institute. From 1949, he worked at the Institute of Automation and Remote Control (IARC), the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1954, Portnov‐Sokolov defended his candidate’s dissertation in engineering. In 1958, he was conferred the degree of Dr. Sci. (Eng.) without any defense for R&D works on launching the world’s first artificial earth satellite.

Portnov‐Sokolov carried out pioneering research on liquid‐propellant rocket engines as a control object. He authored fundamental works on terminal fuel control systems for liquid‐propellant rockets. Portnov‐Sokolov created a scientific school in terminal control theory. The results obtained by Portnov‐Sokolov and his team were widely implemented and increased the payload capacity of domestic launch carriers by 10—15% and the range of liquid‐propellant intercontinental ballistic missiles by 15—25%.

Portnov‐Sokolov, twice a laureate of the USSR State Prize, Honored Man of Science of the Russian Federation, participated as an expert in the Korolev Council of Chief Designers, the Council for Buran spacecraft development, and other similar organizations. Also, he was Deputy Chairman of the Space Committee of the USSR National Committee on Automatic Control and Member of the IFAC Technical Council on Space Control.

Portnov‐Sokolov published only one book:

Bortovye terminal’nye sistemy upravleniya: Printsipy postroeniya i elementy teorii (Onboard Terminal Control Systems: Design Principles and Elements of the Theory), Moscow: Mashinostroenie, 1983. — 200 p. (coauthors B.N. Petrov, A.Ya. Andrienko, and V.P. Ivanov).
